Study Task 8 - Reflective Writing

Reflection on Practical Response

My academic writing focussed on how the synthesis of character and background is important in animation narrative because the way they are incorporated can change the entire tone and message of the film. The catalyst to my practical work was when I explored an animation method whereby drawn characters are infused into real life spaces. This can be seen in the animation Muto (2008) by the artist Blu where hundreds of paintings make up an animated mural. It is a perfect example of how using a literal surrounding can influence the dynamic of animation- in regards to size, distance, and whether the building or wall may have a deeper connotation which could assist portraying the meaning of a narrative.
Moving forward, I applied this technique in a more illustrative way (see Figure 1) as pre production is where my personal practice is focussed. Thus, I took inspiration from two artists who illustrate over real life photos, on Instagram: @g_g.g (see Figure 2) and @subwaydoodle. The unusual contrast and interaction between real life and drawings used in these illustrations and Marty Cooper’s animation Aug(de)mented Reality is a vastly different style to that of Disney’s Music Land however both these animations utilise surroundings and character design to tell a story. Music Land, a sentient space, also allowed a look into how anthropomorphising an environment can further its storytelling capabilities.

This attention to background is why I honed in on background design development; my academic research into colour theory and associations and the Kuleshov Effect then allowed me to delve into a specific fragment of backgrounds. The practical development harks back to my writing as my experimentation is addressing how altering the medium and colour of background can affect an image’s tone, mood and narrative message. Looking at associations of colour palettes also helps the understanding of why a certain colour evokes an emotion in the audience, and therefore their interaction with the work because “Lighting and colour are part of the backbone of emotion” … (Torogovnick, 2017). Learning of The Kuleshov Effect was pivotal for my practical work- it is a theoretical understanding of how an audience may perceive work and says that… “the shot in film always has two values: the one it carries in itself as a photographic image of reality and the one acquired when placed into juxtaposition with another shot. He reasoned further that the second value is more important to cinematic signification” … (Cook and Skylar). This is why my work focussed on changing only one variable; I experimented by combining my understanding of colour and the Kuleshov effect with a focus on environment sketches, as well as addressing sentient spaces. The zine I created is a document to go alongside my academic writing, it is a visual explanation of how varying colour and medium of a background can change the perception and meaning of a piece. The outcome is focussed on storytelling through background design.

Study Task 7 - Practical Planning

Currently, my practical project is directing itself more towards experimentation with background design and how it can be important in telling a story. Looking at animations which use live action footage as background has led me to apply that to illustrative backgrounds. Experimenting with that variable brought the Kuleshov effect to my attention, so now I am investigating how background can create mood and tone to affect a narrative in my practical work. This has also been affected by research into colour scripts, theory and association in my essay.
I am currently planning on addressing the use of media, colour, sentient space, and the Kuleshov effect in different background experiments- which I hope to make into a draft zine to show the flow of my experimentation.

Practical Progress II

After being inspired by the combination of real life and illustration in animation's by Blu and Marty Cooper and drawings from @g_g.g and @subwaydoodle on Instagram, I worked on the images below to show background can be utilised to inspire the design and creation of a character.
All of the photos but one are mine.
The idea is linked to how sentient spaces create an interesting dynamic between character and background.

Practical Progress I

I kicked off the sketchbook by bouncing off the research I started with- this covered topics from the hero/princess genre, gender, cyborg cinema, war propaganda and theories behind audience participation. The latter subject is what I ended up directing my focus on in my response but this was a good task to see if visualising the topics would lead to inspiration.

1: Based on a journal article comparing Frozen and Wreck it Ralph

2,3: Images inspired by research into Cyborg Cinema

4: Research exttracts on Howl's Moving Castle, 5: Visualising selected quotes for inspiration.

6,7: Trying to evoke drawing ideas from contextual research.

8,9: Taking inspiration from Joanna Quinn, mentioned in my essay.

Animism Study Task

The task here was to take an animal or object and bring it to life. This quick hour long attempt is no where near as detailed as my Sentient Space but it captures an idea of how spices may act if they were sentient. The idea is a take on how popular spices are in a household and how they might battle it out to cross off their number of uses on the cupboard door. A silly but sentient animation

Sentient Space Study Task

"Snotty Spaces"

This is my response to the Sentient Space study task, to pick a theme and create a quick looping animation. The background design is based on an existing space and structure, and the surrounding greenery and moss is used to help insinuate the snottiness of this sentient space. I am very pleased with the quick background art seeing as it's a first try at a more realistic background without black line work. The animation is effective in showing this old house's common cold and works on a loop, although with a sneezing noise added it does seem a bit rushed when looped- but works well in single plays!
