Practical Progress I

I kicked off the sketchbook by bouncing off the research I started with- this covered topics from the hero/princess genre, gender, cyborg cinema, war propaganda and theories behind audience participation. The latter subject is what I ended up directing my focus on in my response but this was a good task to see if visualising the topics would lead to inspiration.

1: Based on a journal article comparing Frozen and Wreck it Ralph

2,3: Images inspired by research into Cyborg Cinema

4: Research exttracts on Howl's Moving Castle, 5: Visualising selected quotes for inspiration.

6,7: Trying to evoke drawing ideas from contextual research.

8,9: Taking inspiration from Joanna Quinn, mentioned in my essay.

Animism Study Task

The task here was to take an animal or object and bring it to life. This quick hour long attempt is no where near as detailed as my Sentient Space but it captures an idea of how spices may act if they were sentient. The idea is a take on how popular spices are in a household and how they might battle it out to cross off their number of uses on the cupboard door. A silly but sentient animation

Sentient Space Study Task

"Snotty Spaces"

This is my response to the Sentient Space study task, to pick a theme and create a quick looping animation. The background design is based on an existing space and structure, and the surrounding greenery and moss is used to help insinuate the snottiness of this sentient space. I am very pleased with the quick background art seeing as it's a first try at a more realistic background without black line work. The animation is effective in showing this old house's common cold and works on a loop, although with a sneezing noise added it does seem a bit rushed when looped- but works well in single plays!
